Teesdale & Weardale Search & Mountain Rescue Team were called out last night (Saturday) to search for a missing kite skier in upper Teesdale. The party of 5 kite skiers, from the Wylam area, had set off earlier in the day to ski some of the fells high on the Durham/Cumbria border.
Izzy Barnes Deputy Team Leader said " The weather turned suddenly from sunshine to thick mist and one of the party became separated from the rest. After about an hour his friends raised the alarm and we and the Penrith Team were contacted. The only location we had was that the man was last seen in the Harwood Common area at a height of just under 2000ft. As we proceeded to the area we requested an RAF Sea King helicopter to carry out a search in the remaining minutes of daylight. Unfortunately the mist came in again and the helicopter had to turn back.
Initially there was some confusion as to how many were in the party and how many were missing. When we arrived we were told two of the missing man's friends had gone back on to the fell to search for him. Weather at the time was not good with darkness, strong winds and heavy sleet. We then received a telephone call to say the missing man had come across a remote farm house near Alston so he was safe. However his to friends were still out on the fell searching for him. As the time they said they would return came and went we started to deploy 12 team members and a mountain rescue search dog. Fortunately soon after, his friends returned to the road and we were able to confirm all missing persons were safe". |

The Team were asked to help rescue a dog believed to be trapped underground on Monday night. The Team were contacted by gamekeepers from Raby Estates after one of their dogs had followed a fox into a limestone escarpment on the fell above Club Gill Farm north on Middleton in Teesdale on Friday. The fox ran out of another entrance but the dog did not follow. Despite the gamekeepers leaving food the terrier did not escaped from the network of limestone passages.
Pete Bell, Rescue Team Leader said "Initially we sent up a couple of team members to survey the area. It became clear that we would need the assistance of a more specialist Team so we called in members of Cumbria Ore Mines Rescue Unit. They sent Team members from Carlisle and Alston in Cumbria and Wolsingham in County Durham with specialist equipment. Both Teams worked together with the assistance of the gamekeepers for 8 hours to enlarge the entrance to the chambers. The weather and conditions on Monday evening were not good, it was very cold with snow showers and because of the recent rain the ground was extremely muddy. We eventually broke through to the main chamber which was still very narrow but disappointingly there was no sign of the terrier. Food was left inside and it will be checked over the next few days by the gamekeepers." |

Steve Owers Deputy Team Leader said "Around 9pm we received a call that a party of 10 walkers were lost some where between Cow Green and High Cup Nick in a remote area of the Pennines. One of the party had an injured ankle and was unable to walk any further. 16 members of the Teesdale & Weardale team and 6 other MR members from other teams in the region who were attending a Mountain Rescue course attended with Durham Police. 4 members of the missing party managed to walk out to Cow Green where they were able to get mobile phone communications. They were initially unsure where the rest of the party were but after speaking with a team member we were able to establish a possible location 5km West of Cow Green dam. It took Team members another hour to find the 6 missing walkers. They were all very cold and one had an ankle injury. After they were all re-warmed they were flown to the Cow Green car park by a RAF Search & Rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer." |

Teesdale & Weardale Search & Mountain Rescue Team were called out this evening to search for a man missing from the Crook area of County Durham. The man in his twenties had been missing from home since before lunch and the Police were concerned for his welfare. Deputy Team Leader Steve Owers said " After consulting with the Police we decided to search an area of woodland to the North of Crook with 2 mountain rescue search dogs and handlers. After searching for about 30 mins in the dark one of the dogs indicated and took us about 50m into dense woodland where we found the missing person. He was lying on the damp ground and was very cold. We immediately started to rewarm him and with the help of the Police and Ambulance Service we carried the young man across fields to a waiting ambulance. Without the help of our search dogs it is unlikely we would have found him so quickly".

A couple were walking in the area of Cauldron Snout when the husband fell from the path and tumbled about 8 metres down the steep hillside. His wife called Cumbria Police who contacted their local rescue team at Kirkby Stephen. Kirkby Stephen MRT called Teesdale Team as we are a lot closer to Cauldron Snout. Our Duty Controller issued an immediate callout and requested that the Air Ambulance also attend. One of our team members met the Air Ambulance, road ambulance and police on site. Whilst the GNAAS doctor treated the casualty our team looked at evacuation routes. We then requested the attendance of an RAF Sea King to winch the casualty from the steep hillside. The casualty was then placed in a specialist mountain rescue stretcher by MR, GNAAS and Police working together. We then rigged the stretcher for winching and assisted the RAF winchman with the lift when the Sea King arrived.
The casualty's wife was then assisted by police officers to return to her car in order to travel to the hospital where her husband had been flown by the RAF.
