27th December 2012 MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAM SEEKING RECRUITS
Teesdale & Weardale Search & Mountain Rescue Team are looking for new recruits to join the team which covers the whole of County Durham and parts of the High Pennines including Cross Fell, the highest mountain in the Pennine range.
The Team, who are all volunteers, average around 40 callouts per year. In the past twelve months callouts have varied from a search for ten walkers missing in poor weather and darkness on the North Pennine fells, assisting in a protracted search for a young boy who fell into the River Wear and the search and rescue of a vulnerable man near Crook.
Deputy Team Leader, Steve Owers said "The type of people we are looking for are keen walkers who are comfortable walking and navigating in the Northern hills. During the one year probationary period we will teach them mountain rescue skills including searching, casualty care and working safely near water. As we are a charity and need to raise all the funds required to run the Team we would also expect new members to give up their time to take part in fund raising events such as street collections, sponsored events etc. We will also expect them to attend our fortnightly Wednesday evening training sessions and our monthly Sunday exercises."
Anyone interested in joining the Team must fill in an online application form at www.twsmrt.org.uk by 14th Jan 2013. Those selected will be asked to attend an information/assessment day in February.
