10th January 2006 RESCUE TEAM APPEAL FOR NEW RECRUITS
Teesdale & Weardale Search & Rescue Team are looking for new recruits to join the mountain rescue team which covers the whole of County Durham and parts of the High Pennines including Cross Fell, the highest mountain in the Pennine range.
The Team who are all volunteers, average 45 callouts per year some lasting only an hour or two and some which cover a number of days. However because of work commitments etc. Team members are not expected to attend every callout.
Team spokesman Steve Owers said "The type of men and women we are looking for are keen walkers or climbers who are fit and have basic hill skills such as being able to read a map and take bearings. We will give training in mountain rescue skills and casualty care during a one year probationary period.
Because the majority of our calls are now to non mountain areas we want people who would be prepared to attend the type of callout which entails cancelling a Saturday night out to search for a vulnerable teenager around the outskirts of Darlington.
As we are a charity and have to raise all of the funds needed to run the Team ourselves we would also expect new members to take part in fund raising events such as street collections, sponsored events etc".
An open evening is being held at the Team's Rescue Centre which is behind the Police Station, Harmire Road, Barnard Castle on Wed 25th January at 7.30pm.
