BUSY CHRISTMAS PERIOD FOR LOCAL MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAM
Teesdale & Weardale Search & Mountain Rescue Team have had their busiest Christmas period for some years attending incidents as far apart as York and Northumberland.
Team Leader Pete Bell said "With the forecast for heavy rain on Boxing day the teams swiftwater rescue technicians were put on stand-by to assist our mountain rescue colleagues in Cumbria in the event of more flooding. As it happened the areas that flooded were a little further south and west so on Boxing Day night 9 team members drove down to York to assist in the evacuation from flooded houses. They assisted 15 people to leave their properties overnight putting them into the Team raft and taking them to dry land."
"The same night we were asked to assist North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team with the search for a missing 59 year old lady in the Ponteland area of Northumberland. 8 team member and a mountain rescue search dog not involved in the York incident spent Sunday searching areas near the River Tyne for the lady."
"With the prospect of more flooding in York on Monday 10 team members traveled down early on Monday morning. Fortunately the river levels did not raise as high as expect however the Team were involved in ferrying engineers over to the River Foss flood barrier station in order for them to assess damage to the pumps and their surrounds.”
"The work we have undertaken in the last few days demonstrates the diverse work we do. it is not just about rescuing walkers from the hills and mountains. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all mountain rescue volunteers for giving up their time to help others during the Christmas period."
