31st December 2009 CALLOUTS CONTINUE FOR LOCAL MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAM
Callouts Continue For Local Mountain Rescue Team
Following the busiest day for some years yesterday (Wednesday) for Teesdale & Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team (Press Release 30/12/09 1930hrs) the callouts continued today.
At 01:30 Cumbria Police contacted the team and asked for assistance to reach stranded motorists on the B6276 Middleton in Teesdale to Brough road. This was the same road where the Team were involved in the rescue by RAF helicopter of 6 stranded motorists on Wednesday evening. Paul Renwick, team duty controller said " We sent a 4 wheel drive vehicle with 3 team members from the Durham County side to locate the motorists. We found them about 500 meters on the Cumbria side of the county boundary stuck in a snow drift. We managed to dig them out and escorted them back to Middleton in Teesdale where they continued their journey to Cumbria by the A66. Road conditions at the time especially on the Cumbria side were very bad with lots of drifting snow causing deep drifting. We would like to remind everyone that some of the roads in County Durham reach 500m-600m and in the current weather conditions can become impassable very quickly. Could motorists please try to stick to major routes, observe any road closed signs and if conditions are deteriorating turn round and seek and alternative route by listening to local radio stations or one of the many Internet sites giving road information".
As the weather in the North East is expected to remain cold for a number of days advice from the Team for motorists who need to travel is:
Check your route is open with local radio or Internet sites before you travel
Be prepared, have with you warm clothing, suitable footwear, food and a warm drink, a torch, mobile phone and shovel.
Stick to major routes if possible
Observe all road closed signs
If conditions deteriorate consider turning road and seek an alternative route
